No. 71000 faces off against No. 70000 in a comparison of BR Standard 7 and 8 front ends on the shed at Didcot GWS on 2nd January 1993. Most noticeable is the Caprotti valve gear of the Duke, looking ill-fitting unlike the more conventional compact cylinder valves of the Brit, which together with the WR-style hand-holds on its smoke deflectors give a much cleaner appearance.
