The closure of the WCML south of Stafford for 9 days over the festive season to renew track in Shugborough Tunnel meant the diversion of many trains between Crewe and Colwich Junction via Kidsgrove and the former North Staffs line. On 29th December 2012 Virgin Class 390 Pendolino No. 390039 passes through Kidsgrove station and takes the branch line to Crewe South Junction with the 08:17 London Euston รข?? Liverpool Lime Street service.
