NER snowplough No. 12 Percy Main stands on display at the NRM 'Locomotion' Shildon on 20th October 2012. One of 24 snowploughs that were built at the North Eastern Railway's Works at Gateshead in 1891, the unit was constructed on the frame of a locomotive tender, designed to clear drifts of up to 15 feet. Workmen could ride within the plough to the scene of the drifts, when it could be forced through the snow at speeds of up to 60 mph.
