On 1st May 2023, the NYMR celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the official opening of the line from Grosmont to Pickering. To commemorate the occasion, the railway operated a special service replicating, in part the Royal train that ran on 1st May 1973 and hauled by the same two locomotives, LNER Class J27 0-6-0 No. 65894 and LH&JCR 0-6-2T No. 29. Both seen here at Grosmont, with the J27 carrying the commemorative headboard. The locomotives were also driven by two members of the footplate crew from 1973, Terry Newman and Chris Cubitt.
