In the recent tender for the Suedostbahn consession, bids using locos from the 1970s together with modern stock are permissible. This effectively means that alongside hydrogen trains, the class may remain in service until the Muehldorf line is modernised and electrified. On 28th May 2021, Class 218 No. 218416 awaits departure from Munich Hbf with the 09:07 to Muehldorf.
