A far less polluting way of transporting GPO Mail through London was provided by the Post Office Railway which ran underground between Paddington and Mount Pleasant. I went on an interesting visit there in the late 1950's to see the efficient automated operations. Happily one of the unique cars is preserved at the NRM York on 23rd July 2010.
