Most steam hauled excursions in the up direction on the Settle and Carlisle line stop at Appleby Station for water, however on 30th December 2009, The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express, organised by the Railway Touring Company, was an exception. The train, hauled by ex LMS Black 5s Nos. 44871 and classmate No. 45407, made an impressive sight as they stormed through the Cumbrian landscape just after 15.00 on a snowy winters afternoon.
