Plaque reads: ‘This wheelset was originally the rear set of driving wheels belonging to ‘King’ Class 4-6-0 No. 6023 King Edward II. Unfortunately it was damaged in a shunting accident at a scrapyard in Barry, South Wales in the late 1960’s rendering restoration of this locomotive difficult. Following acquisition of 6023 by the Great Western Society in 1990 a considerable effort was expended manufacturing a replacement wheelset. This was finally accomplished at the beginning of 1994 and the new rear driving wheelset placed under 6023 in 1995 when it was rewheeled. This was the first wheelset to be made for a standard gauge steam locomotive to main line running condition standard in railway preservation, as far as the Society is aware.’.
